Jason Jaco: Forging Art and Community in the Mill District

March 13, 2024

The Mill District is a melting pot of creativity, diversity, and innovation, and amongst its vibrant community of artists, one stands out with his unique craft. Meet Jason Jaco, the owner of TexasStreetWorks and a board member of the Philip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild. His work, a blend of traditional blacksmithing techniques and contemporary design, adds a distinct touch to our neighborhood.

Jason’s journey into blacksmithing is one of passion and dedication. As a member of the Philip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the craft of blacksmithing, Jason has become an integral part of a community that values tradition, craftsmanship, and education.

When asked what advice he would give to those interested in blacksmithing, Jason says, “Something that I tell new people is to become involved with the Guild. Attend some of our meetings and off-month open-forge gatherings. Someone without the tools and materials to get started can practice with blacksmiths who have knowledge and who share their tools. We are all about education.”

Jason’s commitment to the community extends beyond the forge. He is a regular participant in the Columbia Open Studios, an event that showcases the talents of local artists. His enthusiasm for the event is evident when he shares, “I like 701CCA and what they are doing for local artists. I love being a part of the local community and enjoy having people come here and ask questions. I think a lot of what I heard from other people was most of the places were painters where they have artwork hanging on the wall or they’re working on a particular piece of artwork, but here at the shop, things are more three-dimensional. There are more things going on, and visually, it’s exciting for people who don’t normally see hot metal moved and shaped. It’s intriguing.”

But what drives Jason in his craft? What makes him return to the forge day after day? “Most of the things that I’ve made have been for other people to give as gifts and I enjoy seeing their reaction to things I’ve made for them,” he says. The joy of creating something unique, of forging a piece of art that brings happiness to others, is at the heart of what Jason does.

As a Mill District resident, we’re proud to have artists like Jason Jaco in our community. His passion for blacksmithing, his commitment to education, and his active participation in local events like the Columbia Open Studios makes him not just an exceptional artist but also a valued member of our community.
